Why do I feel so bad when I’m not chosen?
Nick Florez Nick Florez, who danced with Britney Spears and Janet Jackson, talked to Grover Dale about his first attempts to secure employment in L.A.:
NICK: “For a long time I focused too much on what was working for other people instead of focusing on what could make me stand apart from other dancers. The first two years of auditioning was overwhelming. I got insecure. Taken aback. Second guessed myself.
Truth is, I got cut because I looked like a kid. In my head, I was making it about my dancing so I was questioning my talent. All those things made me nervous about the things I knew I wanted. Two years went by, the industry changed. First, there was a girl named Brandy. She came out as a young hip hop artist, I went “wow,” I think she’s going to want younger-looking dancers. That was the first video I auditioned for that wanted dancers my age. For once, it wasn’t about being big, muscular, with facial hair. So I was starting to get it. Okay, this is what I’m right for. This is what’s going to work for me…”
Nick being interviewed by Jesse Santos at Justin's audition in HollywoodGROVER: “From that moment on, it did, indeed work for Nick. The qualities he worried about most became the assets that choreographers and pop stars were attracted to. As employment blossomed, so did his bank account. Is Nick resting on his laurels today? Not a chance. He’s as busy as ever gaining ground on a teaching and choreographic career.”
